Trent Merrin has been appointed captain of the Panthers ahead of the 2016 NRL season.

Panthers coach Anthony Griffin revealed his selection to a gathering of media at Pepper Stadium on Wednesday morning.

Although it is Merrin's first season at the foot of the mountains, the NSW and Kangaroos representative boasts an abundance of experience to complement his natural leadership skills.

In September last year Merrin captained the Prime Minister's XIII, a side which included fellow Panthers James Segeyaro and Jeremy Latimore, to a commanding win against Papua New Guinea.

Next month he will run out for the NRL All Stars side before returning to the Panthers for the final preseason trial game against Parramatta.
