Panthers snatch comeback draw

The Panthers produced an enormous comeback to earn a 22-22 draw with Wentworthville Magpies at BEST Hub on Sunday.

Trailing 22-6 at half-time, Karen Stuart's team was staring down the barrel of a fifth consecutive loss before a monumental second half saw the Panthers snatch a draw at their home ground.

Harmony Covacich was at the heart of the Panthers comeback, scoring two tries and then paving the way for both Chloe Pallisier and Chelsea Blankenstein to cross.

In a classic game of two halves, the Panthers had their backs against the wall for the opening 35 minutes.

On the back of a favourable penalty count, Wentworthville soared to a 16-0 led inside 25 minutes.

The Panthers clawed their way back late in the first half when Harmony Covacich brushed four defenders aside to score her first try, with Claudia Bush's conversion making it 16-6.

However, her effort was cancelled out by a Magpies try on the stroke of half-time, putting the Panthers behind 22-6 at the break.

After a slow start to the second half, the Panthers roared to life and drew level with three tries in the space of 10 minutes.

Harmony Covacich led the charge, scoring once again before paving the way for the next two tries.

The Panthers launched their comeback in the 46th minute when Claudia Bush rolled a deft kick in behind the Magpies defence, which Covacich pounced on for her second try.

Soon after, Covacich scattered the goal-line defence with a powerful run, opening the door for Chloe Pallisier to jump out of dummy half and score.

With Bush converting three from three, the Panthers deficit was reduced to 22-18.

Another Covacich line break put the Panthers back on the attack minutes later, where Chelsea Blankenstein clinched the equalising try. A set play saw Kahu Cassidy, Covacich and Georgia Edwards create an overlap, and Blankenstein salvaged a wayward final pass to score in the corner.

Claudia Bush's sideline conversion attempt missed narrowly, leaving the scores locked at 22-22.

A fifth try to snatch victory proved elusive for both teams, as Penrith and Wentworthville came away from their Round 7 with a point each.

On the back of an impressive second half, the Panthers will aim to return to winning ways when they face Wests Tigers on Saturday 23 August at Lidcombe Oval.
