Panthers captain Matt Moylan has been named in an extended NSW squad ahead of the 2017 State of Origin opener next Wednesday.

It is understood if Josh Dugan fails to prove his fitness, Jack Bird will shift into the centres and Moylan will earn a spot on the Blues bench.

Peter Wallace was originally pencilled in as NSW hooker but had to be withdrawn from the side after picking up a groin injury in Sunday's win over Newcastle.
