Trent Merrin took a leading role as the Panthers 2017 Junior Elite Training Scheme (JETS) got underway this week.

Panthers established the JETS program in 2013 as a tool to to 'fast track' select players with specialist coaching, mentoring and physical development.

The players, aged between 16 and 18, have been identified as standout performers in the club's Harold Matts, SG Ball and development squads.

JETS gives them the opportunity to develop in a professional, NRL-standard environment under the guidance of Academy Coach Ben Harden and Acadmy Strength and Conditioning Coach Sam Jones.

To kick off the 2017 program, Merrin spoke at length about the values of the club and 'what it means to be a Panther'.

Drawing on his vast experience at both club and representative level, Merrin explained what is required on and off the field to be successful at the Panthers.

Over the next ten weeks he intends to engage with the players on a number of topics including managing relationships, resilience and goal-setting.

The 2017 JETS program will culminate later in the year with a game against a touring side from St Helens.

Previous graduates of the JETS program include Nathan Cleary, James Fisher-Harris, Corey Harawira-Naera, Moses Leota, Dylan Edwards and Sione Katoa.
